Literacy and Digital Fluency
Updated: Jun 4, 2025
Literacy these days means more than just being able to read words. It's very much about understanding how meaning is communicated, who the audience is, why a message or a text is written in a specific way and what it is trying to make you do or feel. It's about the way you speak to your class mates, the ability to ask for the right help when you need it, the way you interact with others. It's also about looking at how messages are presented, the images used or the graphics used.
Learners are co-constructing knowledge all the time and it is through their creation of texts ( & exposure to a variety of writing styles) and having time to experiment that they deepen their understanding of how their words have power and how as writers they have choice. This leads to an understanding that writers do make choices and in a digital age, it is important than young people develop an understanding that all media is deliberately constructed. As they get older, they will develop skills of questioning and reasoning.
Another aspect that is worth mentioning is errors. You will see them. Different students ready for different types of error correction. There is different learning going on and different time constraints. in many cases, we will revisit some of these errors ( such as the use of quotation marks or spelling) and reteach it. Some students will get it quickly, others may take a big longer.)
Digital fluency is about helping learners to navigate and feel confident moving between different digital platforms as acting in a safe and responsible way. For example, a really basic skill is the idea that most programmes have a copy and paste function. Another skill would be understanding how technology can help you correct your work.
