Case study
I had identified the following student in Year 7 as having a reading problem aside from the fact that he was essentially an ESL speaker, He was having issues with reading comprehension and still very much a word level. My school did not have a dedicated or reading help to support him. I did some research and found different ways to asses his reading and one of is problems was his reading speed which was at the speed of Level 4..
During Year 7, I set up a reading group with him and several other student working on developing different reading skills. I also provided support and suggestions to his mother to help him at home. Unfortunately I was not his teacher in Year 8.
In Year 9, he was falling behind - a little in English but falling far behind in all his subjects and finding himself with labels of having bad study habits and low motivation.
During he school holidays a volunteered to do three lessons with him to help him prepare for his practical exam but also help him with other study habits. During those three days we watched videos and practised different note-taking techniques.
e following areas were covered
1. Different note-taking techniques - mindmapping, handwriting, Cornell and others whilst learning how the brain reacts to positive feedback like completing a task
2. Summary writing and the difference between writing it now rather than later.
3. How to use the school system for tracking assignments.
4. How to assess assignments and work out the level of difficulty, pleasure and time each assignment would take whilst simultaneously assessing the upcoming practical assessment.
5. Active listening in class
6. Positioning oneself in zoom to a void negative feedback from. teachers.
The mindmap on the side shows some of the work I did with him.
