At first glance, we can see that mice and rats look similar, but they are in fact, different structurally. They both have long tails and whiskers. They also almost share the same taxonomy (they only have different genus). But there are many differences between them that we can not see with our own two eyes.

Even though there are visible differences between rats and mice, they actually share a few things in common. They are both classified as rodent animals and they physically look alike, in fact they come from the same kingdom (Animalia), phylum (Chordate), class (Mammalia), order (Rodentia), family (Murids), and species (Rattus norvegicus) but they are from different genus (mus for mice and rattus for rats). Rats and mice are like black people and white people in which they look different but basically the same.

Rats eat 15-30 grams of food, and consume around 15-60 ml of water daily, while mice only eat 3 grams of food, and consume 3 ml of water per day. Mice also are able to produce up to 80 droppings per day. In a year mice can produce up to 7-8 litters, while rats produce up to 40 dropping per day, and in a year, they are capable of producing up to 3-6 liters of droppings.

Generally, rats are bigger than mice. Despite having small bodies and long tails, mice generally have thinner tails compared to rats and they’re usually covered with hair, rats’ tails are hairless and also scaly. Mice also have larger and floppier ears, and both mammals come from different genera and have different living habits. Mice build their nests in burrows whereas black rats build their nests high up, but brown rats like to be close to the ground.

Comparing it’s anatomy, a rat is a four-legged mammal of the Animalia kingdom characterized by a long tail and a furry body. There are more than 64 types of rats with an average size of between 9 and 12 inches long excluding the tail though some species can grow to over 30 inches, while House mice have an adult body length (nose to base of tail) of 7.5–10 cm (3–4 in) and a tail length of 5–10 cm (2–4 in). The weight is typically 40–45 grams.

So, we can conclude that even though mice and rats are very similar, upon closer look they are in fact very different because they have different characteristics, body type, anatomy, living habits, etc.
